In almost a week,
June 10, The Broadway League and the American Theatre Wing will announce this
year’s Tony winners. Living a little bit too far from New York (I live in
Lisbon, Portugal), unfortunately I didn’t see any of the 2011-2012 season, but that
doesn’t mean I don’t have my own ideas of who could be the winners.
In terms of new
musicals (this was a poor season) I believe ONCE will get Best Musical, plus
other awards. By the way, can anyone explain me why its score wasn’t nominated?
I know it was written for the movie, but so was NEWSIES. As for revivals, I
doubt PORGY AND BESS will win over FOLLIES.
When I heard that
PORGY AND BESS was going to Broadway I knew it would get some Tony nominations,
specially for Audra McDonald and Norm Lewis. I’m almost sure McDonald will get
her first Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Musical Tony,
but I’m afraid Lewis won’t get his. In fact, for me, the Best Performance by an
Actor in a Leading Role in a Musical is the hardest Tony to predict. Anyway,
maybe Steve Kazee in ONCE will get it.
Regarding the
Feature Roles, Judy Kaye in NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT and MICHAEL CERVERIS in
EVITA have good chances to be this year’s winners.
This year,
curiously, two plays were nominated for Best Original Score, but I believe a
musical will get it, probably NEWSIES. This show also has a good chance to win
Best Choreography for Christopher Gattelli. As for Best Direction of a Musical,
John Tiffany for ONCE seems a sure bet.
And this is it.
Now let’s wait and see who’ll get the Tonys.
